It's winter Olympics time and I can't help but wonder why baton twirling isn't in the summer Olympics. Then I get this question at baton practice last night... "Is baton twirling a sport? I mean is it a REAL sport?"
I have a beginner competition team. All 12 year olds and all moved from parks and recreation classes to this team last September. She was challenged by a classmate whether baton twirling is a true sport. I asked her these questions:
1. Does it require training?
2. Does it require/develop athletic ability?
3. Does twirling have rules regarding timing, skills & ability?
4. Is there an opportunity for competition comparing skills and ability?
Students how do you defend baton twirling as a sport? Coaches, how do you promote twirling as a sport?
